(Updated June 13th, 2020) I’m a 36-year-old white man, soon to be 37. I write a lot about music production and sampling, mostly in the predominantly Black genres of rap music and instrumental hip-hop. In recent years Black men and women from all over the country have opened up to me in interviews and shared honest, transparent, and moving stories about their creative process, their lives, and their music.
Hello, I'm not specifically special or anything... At least in the whole beat making community but I am one of the few people in South Africa who perpetuate the culture around my area and thar gives me pride, I would like to share the story as to what I am doing and maybe get support to help make it grow. Thanks I want an interview
Well written Gino. I share all your sentiments. The more I think about what's happened over and over again is this: Every police department in the nation needs to listen. They need to listen, and engage with the entire community. They need to change their practices. It is widely agreed among those of us who give a shit, that the "few bad apples" comments are complete bullshit. Systematic change needs to happen, and it needs to come from police themselves. I will continue to support the artists and the music I love, and further my bond with people like you, who share a wordly view that every black person has the right to their freedom and dignity.
Insightful, true words. I've been inspired by your stories of talented Black artists who deserve their due. I also am hopeful seeing the diversity of young people peacefully protesting side by side across the country. But you are correct that if every single white person (and I am one) don't see ourselves and the current systems as culpable we will have lost the thread and democracy. Write on.
Wise words. Think about changing “criminal justice system” to criminal legal system. Our penal system has lost the thread when it comes to justice.
