The Art of Sampling, 3rd Edition: The Sampling Tradition of Hip-Hop/Rap Music & Copyright Law
Hello everyone,
I’m writing with a very exciting Micro-Chop update. I have the unique opportunity to work as a collaborator with Amir Said (Said). Said is an incredibly multi-talented person whose lengthy resume boasts experience as a recording artist, publisher, writer, co-founder of Superchamp Books, and founder of BeatTips. His published books include the revered music/hip-hop text The BeatTips Manual.
Now Said has his sights set on a greatly expanded 3rd Edition of his authoritative book on sampling The Art of Sampling: The Sampling Tradition of Hip Hop/Rap Music & Copyright Law. He is one of a small number of writers with the artistic, business, and technical expertise to deftly execute a book this rich and multi-faceted. Said has a deep understanding of the artistic merits of sampling, frequently sampled artists and genres, influential producers, and beatmaking/sampling techniques. Furthermore, his ability to dissect copyright law as it pertains to sampling and put it into fluid, easy-to-understand prose is second to none.
Writing a 26-chapter book totaling more than 1,600 pages (triple the length of the second edition) demonstrates a rare level of dedication and passion for the art of sampling. Printing physical copies of a book like this is no easy or inexpensive feat. Consequently, Said is asking for support from the beatmaking/producer community to bring this project to fruition. I am working with him as an official collaborator on his Kickstarter campaign to help spread the word about the project so we can meet the target goal of $40,000.
A contribution to this campaign of any amount would be greatly appreciated. Every single contribution will help us hit our mark in 30 days. By contributing, you will also be a change agent who helps Said in his efforts to “change the culture surrounding sampling and copyright law.”
For those who are able to make a more sizable showing of financial support, there are many different pledge tiers with impressive items of appreciation including a lifetime book pass to Superchamp Books and a writing bootcamp with Said.
I will be in touch with updates on our progress in the coming days. In the meantime, please take a moment to look at the beautifully laid out Kickstarter page to learn more about this definitive work on the art of sampling. I am confident the Micro-Chop community will show up in a big way to assist Said’s efforts.
Thank you so much for your consideration and support.
