Back in May and June I did a bunch of Twitter threads of albums organized by various genres, years, themes, etc. I enjoy this process and always find it a great learning exercise.

It’s fun to look at albums by year of release and see if there are commonalities in album cover appearance, production, sound, and theme. Composing these threads makes me appreciate how much good music comes out in any given year and challenges expectations of how a certain era or year of music should sound.

One of the years I chose was 1984. I paired a mix of obvious, well-known releases like Sade’s Diamond Life and Prince’s Purple Rain with more under-the-radar stuff like The Controllers’ self-titled album, which I’d never listened to until I put this list together. I’m glad I found it.

While compiling the thread, I discovered some great records I wasn’t familiar with or had only listened to a few songs from. I hope the list provides you with some new discoveries as well. Each listed album links to a Songlink page where you can listen to the record on your preferred platform.
