202 Micro-Chop Twitter Threads and Playlists
Every Micro-Chop Twitter thread and associated playlist in one place.
In August of 2021, I finalized a pretty ambitious long-form article about the ‘90s underground rap scene in Memphis. To make the story a manageable length I had to leave so much information and music on the cutting room floor.
Once I was done I felt compelled to share more Memphis rap. I made a 113-track YouTube playlist to complement my story. I also made a thread called “Pioneering Women of Memphis Rap” with an accompanying playlist. The thread resonated with a lot of people and did quite well, so I decided to do some more thread / YouTube playlist combos.
Between August 25th, 2021 and July 13th, 2022 I composed 182 Twitter threads with accompanying YouTube playlists. I’m slowly adding some more now after a bit of a break. The threads/playlists focused on specific artists, cover songs, producers, sample sources, and a variety of other topics.
It’s easy to feel like things kind of evaporate after you make them nowadays, so I’ve tried to create some simple archive-style articles for my work recently. Check this collection of the Micro-Chop Monthly playlists as an example.
With regards to the threads and accompanying YouTube playlists, look below and you’ll find all 202. Several threads have a Spotify playlist too and I may try to make some more available on Spotify and other platforms in the future. Whether you want to find inspiration, learn, sample, or simply listen, there should be something worthwhile for you on this list.
A few notes about how the threads are organized: I alphabetized by the first letter of the first word in each playlist title. When a thread/playlist is titled something like Four Tops Covers it focuses on cover versions of that album, artist, band, group, or song. A thread/playlist that focuses on a specific artist covering other people will be titled something like Al Green Covering Other Artists. Compiling all of these thread and playlist links was a bear of a task, so please let me know if you spot an error - it’s very possible I made a few.
I spent a lot of time on these so I have a simple ask. If you use Twitter, please like and/or retweet at least one of the threads. Doing this more than once would be immensely appreciated.
